cant install

Cant install

I installed Vista (32 bit) on my brothers computer without a problem, and it works great. I now want to install it on mine, but I want to duel boot with XP. I selected Custom installation, and selected the HDD (which I emptied of stuff prior to this, so as not to lose any data). The install starts fine, but after the first restart I get an error message that says that it shut down to prevent damage to my computer, followed by this error code: STOP: 0x0000009c (0x00000004,0x83162EC8,0xB2000000,0x00070F0F)
when this happened several times, I unplugged my XP HDD, and booted from the Vista install DVD, and installed that way. It worked fine, but would not boot once I reinstalled my XP HDD. I tried another HDD that I have, and that had the same problem. I know that there is no problems with these HDDs as I can still use them for other uses, and I got a successful install without having the XP HDD installed. Please help!
From
looking at other posts, it seems evident that duel booting is possible with Vista

The error code points to hardware http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329284 What does a chkdsk on the XP drive say?

OK, that doesnt help at all. It only serves to confuse me more, as I have none of the problems listed to my knowledge, and I dont even have a Pentium processor, it is a AMD

What happens once you reinstall the XP drive? will XP boot? Or does it just blue screen? You might want to try running setup from a command line with a noreboot switch (x:\setup.exe /noreboot where x is the dvd drive) Once setup completes, you'll find yourself back at an XP desktop. Restart the system and cross your fingers. You might try x:\setup.exe /checkupgradeonly as well..no idea if it will give any good info, but it doesn't hurt.

OK, when I reinstall the XP drive, I hafta hit the up arrow constantly to keep it from selecting "Setup New OS" (Or something like that) as when it selects that it crashes (error message again) but then XP will boot fine

Download VistaBootPro and use it to set the default OS to XP. You can also use it to delete dean entries on the boot options screen. When you reinstall Vista it will again become the default boot OS.

I burned the iso to a dvd, but when i try to install, it wont let me selct my hard drive. It says that my hard drive isnt ntfs, but it is. anyway to switch this?

Did you try formatting it again just to make sure? -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

No, the format option in the installer didnt work, came up with some error.

I have the same problem as rharris, i tried a fresh install with a ps/2 mouse and keyboard, as well as disconnected all other usb hardware. Id really like some help here. Do you think it is a problem with my video card? 7950 gtx. Id really hope not, I dont have another video card. Otherwise my system is pretty ordinary. I noticed alot of people have this problem. Someone please help me out!!

Same problem here. I created the iso DVD, formatted C for clean install, booted from the DVD, and installed the OS. Then as it reboots as part of the install process, the whole system hangs at the black screen with the "(C) 2006 Microsoft Corporation" After several tries, I left it running for 4 hours today. Nothing more ever happened.
I have no USB devices attached except for my Microsoft mouse and keyboard. My system is a Dell XPS bought in March 2006. I passed the Vista certification test with flying colors.
I can't imagine what my problem might be. My components couldn't be more common...

your computer restarted maybe because it was set to "restart when hangs" I had the same problem a short time ago(but not restart). but I have solved it already
Here are my suggestions 1.format your destination partition. 2.begin your installation not in the Windows but before it(use boot from CD-ROM) 3.take away as many plugs on your mother board as possible(especially in the PCIs)
but be careful. If you use a dual boot and begin the installation immediately after the formating without going to XP even once , the partition name in vista WOULD NOT MATCH THOSE IN XP. for exmple ,if my XP is in the C patition and I install vista in E. The vista will call the partition where it is installed Partition C and the original C and D would be D and E etc.
